Basic Car Insurance Requirements in MA
Your car insurance coverage has 4 basic requirements, per Massachusetts State Law, which are also referred to as Compulsory Insurance:
- Bodily injury to others
- Personal injury protection
- Bodily Injury caused by an uninsured auto
- Damage to someone else’s property
Optional car insurance coverages can include:
- Medical payments
- Limited collision
- Substitute transportation
- Towing and labor
- Bodily injury caused by an under-insured auto
- Optional bodily injury to others – Note: this provides coverage for damages to others if you or a household member is legally responsible for the accident. Unlike the Compulsory Insurance coverage, this option does provide coverage for injuries to guest occupants and for accidents occurring outside of Massachusetts.
