Satisfaction was reported as higher among customers who file a claim through their agent, than among those who file a claim through direct channels. Great for Massachusetts home insurance customers. According to the J.D. Power and Associates’ 2013 Property Claims Satisfaction Study, customers have remained satisfied with their insurers’ handling of property insurance claims even after two of the worst years for natural disaster in the US. The study also revealed that customers tend to prefer reporting their claims to their insurance agents whenever possible, testament to the diligence and responsiveness of independent insurance agents.
The study specifically measured satisfaction with the property claims experience among customers who filed a claim for damages covered under their homeowners’ policy by examining these five factors:
- First notice of loss
- Estimation process
- Service interaction
- Repair process
Here are some tips for homeowners to consider which can assist in protecting your property effectively:
- Consider not only the replacement value of your home, but of its contents too, including jewelry, art, collectibles, electronics and other expensive items
- Have your valuables appraised, photographed and declared on your policy
- Keep a record of measures you have taken to protect your belongings from theft or damage, for example: a home security system, storage in a safe, or secure storage off-premises, etc
- Keep an inventory of your personal property including model and serial numbers, at least of the most expensive items
And remember, after suffering property damage photograph the situation as soon as possible, before cleanup or restoration has begun. It is also very helpful if you can be at your property when the insurance adjuster visits, to answer any questions.
