Motorists will no longer have the option to stop at a toll booth to pay by cash when going over the Tobin Bridge! Beginning in Early 2014, tolls will be collected ONLY electronically either through the motorist’s E-ZPass transponder or through a program by which a camera will capture the license plate and the car’s registered owner will then be billed via mail.
One advantage for residents of Boston is that MassDOT offers discounts to residents of Charlestown and Chelsea for travel over the Tobin Bridge and discounts to residents of East Boston, South Boston and the North End for travel through the Sumner and Ted Williams Tunnels. Of course, proof of residency is required along with an application. Residents, however, must also visit one of the E-ZPass Customer Service Centers annually to re-qualify in order to remain in the discount program. Go to http://www.massdot.state.ma.us/ for more program information.
